Architect Howard Lane, a former student of Mies van der Rohe, designed very few residential dwellings.

Lane worked in commercial development with notable firms as Skidmore Owens & Merrill, A.C. Martin, and Pereira and Luckman dotting Los Angeles’ built environment with modern buildings like the Travelers Insurance Building in the Neo-Streamline Moderne style on Ventura Boulevard.

The Schustack Residence—built in 1957 on a .45-acre lot located at 1816 N. Stanley Ave at the base of the Hollywood Hills— is one of Lane’s rare modernist post and beam style gems.

Previously owned by an international designer who meticulously maintained the original design features, the 3,007-square-foot post and beam boasts quintessential midcentury modern elements as beamed ceilings, wood paneling, a stacked-stone fireplace, built-ins, vintage light fixtures, and floor-to-ceiling walls of sliding glass leading to a newly added kidney-shaped pool.
“Blueprints and a specification book reveal the meticulous planning that went into this house ….” Seeking its third owner the home is listed for $2.950 million.
