“You’re coming home to your personal kinda California glass dream house” is how real estate developer, Rachel Gerstein, describes The Mews in Atwater Village.

Gerstein teamed up with the award winning architect firm, Corsini + Stark, to design 23, eco-friendly single family homes in Atwater Village using Los Angeles’ small lot ordinance.

The design concept for the dwellings stem from several historic housing types. Rick Corsini describes it as taking a mews, “a grouping of small dwellings which front on an alley or pedestrian passage,” combining it with traditional urban row housing, adding a courtyard that becomes the heart and soul of the house, and then using a clear modernist idea of space.

Completed in 2010 the two-story home offers three bedrooms and three bathrooms with enviable modern features. The C-shaped floor plan offers high ceilings and walls of glass that fill the home with light, showcasing beautiful polished concrete and dark bamboo floors. In the kitchen you’ll find marble countertops, Bosch appliances and a tile backsplash. Downstairs opens up to a dramatic atrium-style courtyard. Upstairs, there’s a large master bedroom with an attached bathroom, and two additional bedrooms for guests or workspace. There is a private front patio and also a directly-accessible two-car garage with laundry. Systems include solar panels, water softening, central a/c, Nest thermostat and smart lighting.

The heart of Atwater Village is nearby with local favorites Good Measure, All’acqua, The Morrison, and Proof Bakery along with the walking/biking trails of the LA River.
