The last time a unit opened up at the Schindler-designed Sachs Apartments in Silver Lake was two years ago. Right now you have the rare opportunity to live in one of the studio apartments currently being offered for lease.

This architecturally significant building is also known as Manola Court. It was designed for Schindler’s friend, Herman Sachs, a muralist and decorator who designed interiors for an art deco landmark, Union Station, and City Hall.
Once described as reminiscent of “an ancient European hill town” the buildings graduate up the hillside. As you move through the outdoor areas landscaped by Terremoto you feel the “interconnecting living space with garden walkways” encouraging a strong sense of community with your neighbors. This unity is visually detailed on the exterior with “extended window fascia, and abstract ornamentation that organizes the massing of the spaces, as well as accentuating the dynamic vertical thrust of the buildings.”
Inside this fully furnished modernist jewel is linear, functional, design featuring beautiful woodwork in the walls, floors, ceiling and built-ins.
A smartly designed, high-end, kitchen is my favorite area in this compact space measuring 350 square feet. In true Schindler fashion the kitchen cabinetry mimics the wood detail consistent with the architect’s work and it has clever storage.
The bed is tucked into a wall cut out and is equipped with shelving for books. And there’s a tiled bathroom.
The studio opens up to a spacious porch where there’s enough room to have a few friends over for dinner and enjoy the views of the Silver Lake hills to the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Park Observatory, and witness some glorious sunsets.
