Mary Blair was an animator and concept artist for Disneyland’s “It’s a Small World” attraction. Her former personal residence has a lot size measuring over 17,000 square feet that makes you feel like you’re in your own world, after all.
The house is known as the Mary and Lee Blair Residence and Studio. The Blair’s modernist home was designed by architect Harwell Hamilton Harris and built from scratch in 1939.
Harris worked for modernist architects Richard Neutra and Rudolf Schindler before branching out on his own in 1933.
Rather than compete with the steep hillside, Harris took full advantage of the secluded setting and designed this three-storied home to mimic the levels of the hillside it rests on.
In 2011 the then owners restored and mindfully modernized the structure. Today the home features warm and rich wood tones that start with exterior redwood siding and continues inside the open floor plan.
Walls of glass, multiple large windows, and generously sized double doors let in the light and the several outdoor areas that include a back patio with a landscaped hillside.
The former studio, listed as the second bedroom, offers endless potential for use. And who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired creatively like Mary and her husband Lee (also a Disney animator.)
